El Department of Health of the Government of Aragon and Aragonese Health Service (HEALTH) are committed to implementing scientific evidence in patient care. For this reason, they have promoted the II Conference of the Spanish Centre for Evidence-Based Care (CECBE) in Aragon, which were held on Monday, November 25, at CaixaForum Zaragoza.
They attend them 250 people, with the presence of Nursing professionals from all health sectors of the Autonomous Community. The conferences are organized by the General Directorate of Care and Humanization of the Autonomous Government, In collaboration with the Aragon Health Research Institute.
Evidence-based care is based on the best available scientific advances and contributions to define optimal patient care. They consist of decision-making that allows for the best care, resulting from the application of research in health services, clinical practice, the experience of the professional, as well as taking into account the environment, the available means and the circumstances and preferences of the patients.
The conference was opened by the Minister of Health of the Government of Aragon, José Luis Bancalero Flores. The general director of Care and Humanization of the Department of Health of the autonomous Executive also participated in the welcome, Estibaliz Toulouse, the managing director of SALUD, Ana castillo, and the scientific director of the Aragon Health Research Institute (IIS Aragon), Angel Lanas.
Bancalero Flores stressed that the use of evidence-based decisions ensures that the actions and interventions of health systems are based on the best available data. “It also implies a higher quality of care, as well as greater safety and efficiency. In this way, variability in clinical practice is reduced and resources are optimized,” he explained.
The minister has indicated that the ultimate goal is to transform care towards excellence, an issue that has been addressed in these conferences, both in the inaugural conference and in sessions with experts, in a round table of experiences and through communications.
For the benefit of the people
The general director of Care and Humanization, Estíbaliz Tolosa, has stated that the purpose of this meeting is share knowledge, reflect on the role of professionals dedicated to care, and transform their actions and decisions to benefit the people they care for.
“Scientific evidence is not just a set of data or theories; it is the basis that allows us to make responsible and effective decisions. It must be part of our decisions as professionals, of our actions, and of every step we take towards continuous improvement.”

Tolosa added that the evidence “challenges us to question the established” and “to continually improve our practices.” During this event, “we will delve deeper into the meaning of these premises, learning that science and practical application must always go hand in hand,” he added.
The general director has expressed the desire to "align, from Aragon, our actions, strategies and decisions with the principles, values and objectives promoted by CECBE, dedicated to promoting excellence in the areas in which it operates, based on evidence, good practices and a commitment to the comprehensive development of people, adopting and innovating in new tools and methodologies."
Estíbaliz Tolosa is convinced that this alliance is an opportunity “to build a better future both for the professional development of those of us who are dedicated to care, and for society, maximizing our strengths and expanding our reach.”
For her part, the managing director of SALUD, Ana Castillo, said that having evidence-based care “is essential for the evolution, sustainability and improvement of our health service.” She also continued, “it is an indispensable tool in the continuous improvement of care for professionals from different health disciplines, including nursing, physiotherapy, speech therapy and other professionals.”

The Spanish Centre for Evidence-Based Health Care (CECBE) is made up of the Carlos III Health Institute and the Autonomous Communities. Its objective is to promote, lead and coordinate initiatives that promote, in clinical practice, evidence-based decision-making and thus improve health outcomes.
