15 December, 2020Seasonal fruits in December and January: benefits and how to preserve them
16 December, 2020The event included the participation of several members of the Optimization Programs for the use of Antimicrobials in the Hospitals of Aragon, whose contribution to advancing awareness about the proper use of these medications is essential.
The Aragón Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón) held a seminar yesterday online on the 'Prudent use of antibiotics' in order to improve the training of professionals on this matter and highlight the contribution of the members of the Antimicrobial Use Optimization Programs (PROA) to advance awareness about the appropriate use of antibiotics. these medications.
The session highlighted that the emergence and spread of infections caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotic treatment constitute one of the most serious threats facing public health and represents one of the most important challenges for health systems today. In this sense, it was highlighted that monitoring the use of antibiotics is a fundamental pillar in the fight against resistance, since multidrug-resistant bacteria cause 33.000 deaths per year in Europe and generate additional health spending of 1.500 billion euros annually.
In this context, the training of professionals on the appropriate use of antibiotics and PROAs constitutes a fundamental tool to advance awareness of the problem that the misuse of antibiotics has generated and achieve prudent use of them. PROAs are teams of health professionals who seek to improve the clinical outcomes of patients with infections, minimize the adverse effects associated with the use of antimicrobials (including resistance) and guarantee the use of cost-effective treatments. In PROAs, decisions are made that require the integration of clinical, microbiological and pharmacological aspects and are organized from a multidisciplinary perspective, with the intervention of doctors, pharmacists, nurses, etc., with the intention of providing support and facilitating decision-making. decisions to any healthcare professional.
The coordination of the day was in charge of Dr. Reyes Abad of the HMS and Dr. Tránsito Salvador of the HCU and sponsored by the Menarini laboratories.
The initial presentation was given by Reyes Abad, head of the pharmacy service at the Miguel Servet University Hospital. Next, Antonio López, human health coordinator of the National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance (PRAN) of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products, addressed the importance of PROA in the development of this strategic and action plan whose The objective is to reduce the risk of selection and spread of antibiotic resistance and, consequently, reduce the impact of this problem on the health of people and animals, sustainably preserving the effectiveness of existing antibiotics.
Afterwards, the different professional profiles of the PROA teams from some of the hospitals in Aragon briefly explained their contribution to achieving the set objectives, also highlighting the need to take extreme measures to control the use of antibiotics in the context of the current pandemic and the importance of research in the use of antibiotics and how hospital pharmacists can contribute to promoting it, this fact being especially important today. Tránsito Salvador, head of the pharmacy service at the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital, moderated the round table in which Mercedes Arenere and Javier Castillo, from the Clínico, and Rafael Huarte and Rosa Martínez, from the Miguel Servet, participated.
Finally, Santiago Grau, head of the pharmacy service at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona and one of the leading international experts in the proper management of the use of antimicrobials, offered the closing conference on future perspectives in this area.
