The president of the recently launched Spanish Multidisciplinary Pain Society (SEMDOR), Dr. Luis Miguel Torres, highlights that ibuprofen does not aggravate the symptoms of infection by the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
"Ibuprofen not only does not aggravate COVID-19 patients, but it is one of the best anti-inflammatories in these conditions of infection, since it counteracts a large part of the pro-inflammatory proteins in greater quantities than paracetamol does. For Therefore, our proposal for COVID-19 patients is the use of ibuprofen instead of paracetamol for the treatment of fever," the also president of the Andalusian Pain Society says in an interview with Europa Press.
This is a thesis that Dr. Torres also defended a few months ago in the webinar on 'Pain in the face of COVID-19', with a presentation called 'Analgesic medications in COVID-19 patients', in which he also advocated the taking ibuprofen, compared to this initial premise that promulgated the preferential taking of paracetamol in case of coronavirus infection.
Thus, the also professor at the University of Cádiz and director of the Department of Surgery at the University of Cádiz explains that published works show that ibuprofen is a drug that reduces most pro-inflammatory proteins, "this statement is reflected of the scientific literature", in which the effects of different analgesics on the pro-inflammatory proteins of the lung are studied, the place where the greatest problem of SARS-CoV-2 infection develops.
In fact, the pain expert recalls that in Argentina a clinical trial is being carried out on the use of inhaled ibuprofen in patients with the new coronavirus infection, with the preliminary results being "very encouraging", according to him, and not only in the management of fever, but also in the inflammation that causes so many problems in patients.
At the same time, he warns that if we compare COVID-19 patients with those other patients who have another inflammatory lung disease, such as respiratory distress syndrome, it is also seen that in these the proteins that are expressed by the inflammation that causes the disease They are counteracted "more effectively by ibuprofen and similar drugs than by paracetamol, which is a neutral agent in this regard."
Now, the president of SEMDOR recalls what are the contraindications for the use of ibuprofen in patients infected with COVID-19: "They are the same as for non-infected patients, that is, it cannot be used in patients who have an ulcer." stomach problems, coagulation problems and kidney problems, or they are hypertensive.
Ultimately, he regrets that as a result of the hoax spread about ibuprofen against COVID-19, many patients may have interrupted their treatment if they were infected, when it is best to use it.
"In this pandemic, 'fake news' is something very common and extremely discouraging. The population needs truthful and verified information about treatments. We have seen many hoaxes that have not only come from ill-intentioned people, but even from doctors, health organizations and of politicians who, in an attempt to bring some hope to patients, have recommended treatments that have later been shown to be of no use, or even harmful," he points out.
On the other hand, the head of the Anesthesia, Resuscitation and Pain Treatment Service at the Puerta del Mar Hospital in Cádiz recalls the important role that ibuprofen plays in the face of acute pain, "an alarm signal of some problem in the body, such as a fracture or a burn, or arises after a surgical operation", and that can be resolved "quickly and easily" thanks to this type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
