The Surgical, Clinical and Experimental Research Group of the IIS Aragón receives the University Teaching award from the Ministry of Defense
10 December, 2021The group Molecular Oncology of the Aragon Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón), whose main researcher is Alberto Jiménez Schuhmacher, has received a donation of 5.000 euros from the Aragonese company Atesa, dedicated to electrical assemblies and industrial instrumentation.
Thanks to funding from Atesa, Jiménez Schuhmacher's group will be able to promote the 'Virtual biopsy' project, which consists of obtaining part of the information provided by a biopsy through an imaging test, that is, a photo with a scanner , but of the entire tumor, not just a small sample of tissue. “To do this, we studied pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and we have found proteins in the tumor stem cells of this tumor that tell us how a patient will respond to chemo and its potential for the disease to reappear,” explains the researcher. “With this contribution we will be able to continue developing nanoantibodies that stick very specifically to these proteins. We are modifying them so that, once injected into a patient, they stick to the tumor and function as a contrast that we can detect with a scanner, as if it were a 'virtual biopsy' that tells us secrets about the tumor. This support comes at a critical time and will allow us to accelerate this research,” he adds.

This donation is part of Atesa's commitment to investing in research and science, as well as in different solidarity actions, since, in addition to this IIS Aragón project, this year it will allocate its traditional Christmas gift budget to the Food Bank from Zaragoza.
The IIS Aragón highlights the importance of public-private collaboration to promote research not only through altruistic donations, but also through agreements and alliances for the development of research projects whose results benefit the business community and society.
