The Surgical, Clinical and Experimental Research Group of the Aragón Health Research Institute (IIS Aragón) today receives the Defense Award in university teaching for developing the subject 'Medicine and surgery in extreme circumstances', in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zaragoza and the General Defense Hospital of Zaragoza. Antonio Guemes, principal investigator of the IIS Aragón group, and Marta Baselga, researcher at IIS Aragón and doctoral student in the Biomedical Engineering and Medicine programs, will attend the gala to collect the award.
The Ministry of Defense thus recognizes the importance of this subject, which is presented as a tool to learn, in a multidisciplinary way, all aspects related to medicine in emergency situations, that is, in scenarios outside the scope of conventional medicine and train professionals in this task. It covers knowledge of broad fields of medicine and surgery typical of conflict situations.
The award also highlights the different areas of research in military health that the Güemes group addresses, such as the strategic line of care for polytraumatized patients. Specifically, its researchers are developing various innovative instruments for the control of trauma and bleeding, both in the military and civilian world. One of the projects they are working on consists of a simulator that integrates any type of hemorrhage faced by military healthcare workers, which was recognized in 2019 by the IIS Aragón as the Best Innovation Project.
