20 February, 2024These therapies are not yet carried out in Aragon and the Department of Health, through the IIS Aragón, has launched a project to implement them in our Community. This unit will include an area that will meet the precise requirements for administering CAR-T cell therapies for cancer pathologies.
The future Advanced Therapies Unit of Aragón is already in the bidding phase. The work on the spaces that will house this unit must begin before the summer and the execution period is expected to be 32 weeks. An area of 2.000 square meters will be renovated that will include a grade B clean room with three rooms for the production of advanced therapy drugs, essential for administering CAR-T and CAR-NK cell therapies. These are treatments in which the patient's T cells (type of immune system cell) are modified in the laboratory so that they attack cancer cells. These therapies are not yet carried out in Aragon and the Department of Health, through the Health Research Institute of Aragon (IIS Aragón), has launched a project to implement them in our Community.
The initiative is possible thanks to the posthumous donation of 1,9 million from Clementa Soria from Zaragoza, which she gave to the Spanish Association Against Cancer to support research in Aragon in this field. The project also has added financing from IIS Aragón and the Government of Aragón. The Advanced Therapies Research Unit will be located in a space on the first floor of the Miguel Servet University Hospital in Zaragoza. There, in addition to the clean room and other necessary infrastructure, all the activity that the IIS Aragón carries out in the aforementioned health center will be unified. The goal is for the new spaces, including the Advanced Therapies Research Unit, to be operational in January 2025.
The IIS Aragón is the Health Research Institute of the Hospital Complex formed by the University Hospitals “Hospital Clínico Universitario Lozano Blesa” and “Hospital Universitario Miguel Servet” and Primary Health Care, the University of Zaragoza and the Aragonese Institute of Health Sciences . The initiative of the Advanced Therapies Unit also has the support of Aspanoa, as this entity supports research for the administration of this type of therapies also in the little ones.
