1 February, 2022The psychologist specialized in anxiety disorders gives some keys that relate sport to good mental health.
Going for a run, playing paddle tennis with friends, taking a bike ride, swimming... any of these activities can help keep the body in optimal condition. However, In sport, not everything is physical, but the mental part also plays an important role., as the experts defend. "Exercising, especially on a regular basis, has many advantages for our mental health," says Ana Cruz, a psychologist specialized in anxiety disorders.
"Among them, the most important is that generates positive moods", advances this psychologist, who details that it does so through the release of a series of chemical substances. She herself defines them as "wonderful" and they are, as she says in the video above, "neurotransmitters or hormones".
What are those substances? Cruz highlights four different ones. "First of all the Serotonin: it is the hormone of well-being, it gives us a feeling of calm, it is an emotional regulator. Also the dopamine: pleasure hormone, desire to repeat, that we anticipate something positively, that motivates us," adds the psychologist specializing in anxiety.
And what about cortisol?
The personal trainer Jéssica Gómez also asks him about the cortisol, a hormone that has become "hot" in recent months. "This hormone is the stress hormone, the complete opposite of the above. That is why exercise is so important, because if we increase these positive neurotransmitters, we will alleviate the effects that cortisol has," explains Ana Cruz. That is to say, this psychologist specialized in anxiety disorders has an impact: "We raise positive substances and lower negative ones."
Playing sports during exam time, as it is currently, also has benefits, in addition to improving self-esteem and promoting social ties, as Ana Cruz concludes.
