October 19, 2021The transmission of ultrasonic waves through the masks allows us to check how the air particles interact with the mask and with the pores of the material, and how resistant the different models are.
Researchers from the Institute of Physical and Information Technologies (ITEFI) have developed an ultrasound test to determine the breathability of masks Front of Covid-19, a technique that will allow the quality of this facial protection to be evaluated quickly, easily and non-invasively.
The transmission of ultrasonic waves through the masks allows us to check how the air particles interact with the mask and with the pores of the material, and how much the different models resist, from the hygienic ones to the FFP2 and FFP3.
"The study consisted of transmitting ultrasounds, between 0,2 and 1,6 megahertz (MHz), through different types of masks," details Tomás Gómez, researcher at ITEFI of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and author of the study.
The ultrasound is affected, when passing through the mask, by material pore properties such as size, tortuosity and sinuosity; as well as other aspects such as the number of layers. These parameters would help determine its resistance to flow and its filtration efficiency," says Gómez.
The technique allows evaluate the quality of masks quickly, easily and non-invasively, because it does not require any liquid to be applied between the material to be studied and the ultrasound emitters.
The results of the study show notable differences in response to ultrasound, and, therefore, in the breathability and filtration capacity of all masks: hygienic, surgical, reusable or with FFP2 and FFP3 certification.
"In general terms, the greater the filtering capacity of the mask, the more opaque they are to ultrasound; and the more breathable the masks are, the more transparent they are to ultrasonic waves," he says.
The first parameter analyzed, breathability, refers to the pressure necessary for air to pass through the mask; while the second indicator, Filtration determines the material's ability to prevent the spread of particles and aerosols..
