September 26, 2022"Cholesterol is an innocent bystander, and saturated fat in the diet has been undeservedly demonized," study says
Researchers from Brigham Young University (United States) and New South Wales (Australia) have shown that LDL cholesterol, also known as 'bad', alone has a "very weak" association with heart disease and stroke.
Likewise, the work, published in the journal 'Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity', has shown that when people with high LDL and optimal triglycerides and HDL received a statin, there was no benefit.
"The people who are not overweight, have low blood sugar, exercise, and follow a low-carbohydrate diet, usually thave optimal levels of triglycerides and HDL and sometimes have high levels of LDL. "Our findings show that people who have this healthy combination of diet and lifestyle, as well as high LDL, did not show any benefit from taking a statin," the experts emphasized.
Furthermore, they consider that their review also challenges the long-standing claim that low-carbohydrate diets, which are often high in saturated (animal) fats, contribute to heart disease.
