To mark the World Thrombosis Day, the Thrombosis Commission of the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital has joined the international campaign promoted by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) to raise awareness among the population and health professionals about the magnitude of this silent and preventable disease.
La thrombosis, formation of clots within the blood vessels, is responsible for 1 out of 4 deaths in the world. Despite its high incidence, it remains an underdiagnosed disease and, in many cases, preventable with appropriate preventive measures.
“Thrombosis can affect anyone, but knowing the risk factors and acting in time saves lives,” the doctor emphasizes. Dr. Gavín, President of the Thrombosis Commission.
The main risk factors include prolonged hospitalization, surgery, cancer, pregnancy, hormone treatments, and immobilization. The Commission therefore emphasizes the importance of systematically implement antithrombotic prevention and prophylaxis measures in all at-risk patients, both hospitalized and outpatients.
During this day, the Thrombosis Commission team has carried out activities of divulgation y sensitization aimed at professionals and citizens, with the aim to improve knowledge about deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, Its alarm symptoms (leg pain and swelling, shortness of breath, chest pain) and need to consult early before its appearance.
A scientific session was held, entitled "Let's talk about thrombosis", in charge of the Dr. Carmen Fernández Capitán, an expert in this area, and a roundtable discussion with patients and a group of physicians, pharmacists, and nursing staff from various services involved in addressing this problem.
Likewise, the importance of anticoagulant treatment monitoring and control programs was emphasized, as well as the essential role of Hemostasis and Thrombosis Units in the safety of these patients.
