More than 100.000 Aragonese suffer from migraine
September 13, 2019Thanks to this advance, it becomes a disease with cure options. Several professionals traveled to different centers in Spain to train
The Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital in Zaragoza has begun to apply a new surgical technique for patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis, an extension of cancer that was practically terminal until the implementation of this new therapeutic option.
Until recently, patients who suffered from this tumor growth in Aragon had to move to another community to undergo surgery. This situation has changed with this technique of cytoreductive surgery and peritonectomy associated with intraperitoneal chemotherapy for patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis.
Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC), or peritoneal metastases, is a clinical term that defines the growth of cancer through the peritoneum – the sheet that covers the inside of the abdomen – and includes any tumor dissemination that affects, locally or massively, the peritoneal serosa and the neighboring anatomical structures. It mostly originates from gastrointestinal, gynecological tumors or other locations, whether or not associated with another metastatic tumor expression.
WITH ALTERNATIVE
After years without having any therapeutic option for these patients, this tumor can now be conceived as a potentially treatable disease in some cases, especially through radical cytoreductive surgery (CRS), sometimes associated with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and intravenous chemotherapy. perioperative. Dr. Alfredo Jiménez, coordinator of the group that promoted the project and member of the surgical team for the treatment of this pathology, explained that almost a year ago "a period of intensive training was launched, with various professionals selected by the different services traveling to centers national institutions of recognized prestige where this technique was already being carried out successfully.
So, from now on, Aragonese patients who suffer from this ailment, about 25 or 30 a year, as a result of the spread of peritoneal mesothelioma, peritoneal pseudomyxoma (appendiceal and ovarian), ovarian, appendiceal, colon, rectum or gastric will be able to receive quality, multimodal and comprehensive treatment at the University Clinical Hospital. Thus, they will no longer have to travel to receive it at centers in other communities, where this technique has already been implemented for some time.
The Clinic aims to be a center of excellence and super-specialization in the territorial healthcare field through the deployment of agile and effective patient care circuits.
