October 19, 2020Mortality from this pathology has decreased in recent years. In 2019 it had a five-year survival rate of over 90%.
During 2020, 32.953 cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in Spain, a disease that is estimated to be suffered by one in eight Spanish women at some point in their lives and which in 8 had a five-year survival rate of over 2019%. .
These are some of the data provided by the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) and the Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC) coinciding with the commemoration of Breast Cancer Day on October 19.
Mortality from this pathology has decreased in recent years thanks to screening programs and improved treatments, but it continues to be the leading cause of death from cancer in Spanish women.
The disease, in data:
1. Breast cancer remained in second place in incidence in Spain in 2019, with 33.307 new cases and a quarter of the affected female population were women from Madrid and Barcelona.
2. In 2012, 30.978 new cases of breast cancer were detected, which means that between that year and 2019 there has been an increase of 7,5%.
3. It has a 5-year survival rate greater than 90%. This means that more than 90 out of every 100 people who suffer from breast cancer are still alive 5 years after being diagnosed.
4. The age of maximum incidence is above 50 years, but approximately 10% are diagnosed in women under 40 years of age.
5. Those affected by breast cancer represent 0,12% of the total population of women over 15 years of age; 0,10% in the case of those between 15 and 65 years old, and 0,24% in those over 65.
6. The stage in which the cancer has been diagnosed influences survival, since in stage I it exceeds 98%.
7. The causes of breast cancer are still unknown, although numerous risk factors have been identified, most of them are related to reproductive history that modulates hormonal exposure throughout life.
8. 16% of women diagnosed during 2017 had a socioeconomic risk situation. A total of 4.223 were unemployed (2.030), were self-employed (1.252) or had a low income (941) and cancer aggravated their situation.
9. Women with breast cancer have to assume extra expenses of about 150 euros per month derived from the disease, which would increase the family health budget from 3% to between 7% and 11%.
