October 14, 2021Representatives of administrations and the pharmaceutical industry agree that the availability of innovation in the National Health System must be accelerated
Improve the access of patients in Spain to new medications. Representatives of both the Administration and the pharmaceutical industry agreed on this objective in the High-level conference Health+Innovation: a binomial for post-Covid Spain, held this Tuesday in Cáceres.
The Secretary of State for Health, Silvia Calzón, indicated that among the objectives of the Ministry of Health in terms of innovation is to accelerate this access. “The purpose of all these measures cannot be other than to deliver the best possible therapies to patients and also do so in the shortest time possible, as quickly as possible”. "To achieve this," he said, "we must combine a long-term vision that gives security to R&D projects, an investment in reinforced public basic research and pharmaceutical regulation that also guarantees rapid access to therapeutic innovations by the population".
Likewise, the Minister of Health and Social Services of Extremadura, José María Vergeles, insisted on the need to be “much more competitive” in the incorporation of innovation. “We have to speed up the incorporation of medicines and innovation in general. We need to measure the results and we must also review what the chain is like for approving new medications in this country,” he indicated.
Invest in an opportunity for the country
The general director of Farmaindustria, Humberto Arnés, also emphasized the need to ensure the best possible access for patients to innovation: “It is essential to have pharmaceutical regulation that recognizes innovation and makes it possible for this innovation to reach patients quickly”. For Arnés, it is a key aspect for Spain to strengthen its leadership in clinical research and attract greater investment from the pharmaceutical industry, which, he recalled, is the great driving force of public research in biomedicine.
On the other hand, the Secretary of State for Health also highlighted the need to consider the resources allocated to health as an investment. “We have to assume that awareness that We are at all times facing an investment sector and not a spending sector., because this sector generates returns in a triple aspect: health, economic and social.
