12 June, 2019A sedentary lifestyle is the main trigger of this disease, which can lead to the development of liver cancer.
25 percent of Spaniards have a fatty liver or hepatic steatosis, and approximately 5 percent have developed chronic inflammation, called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, with a variable degree of fibrosis (scarring), as reported by experts from the National Federation of Patients and Liver Transplants (FNETH) on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of liver disease due to non-alcoholic fat deposits.
It is a chronic and silent disease in which fat accumulates progressively over the years in abnormally high quantities inside the liver. These fat deposits do not cause any symptoms, but they can trigger an inflammatory response at the liver level that over time leads to the development of liver cirrhosis and/or liver cancer.
Its causes are varied, but it is known that it is closely related to sedentary lifestyle habits, a high-calorie diet, overweight and diabetes, among other pathologies associated with the so-called metabolic syndrome. In recent years there has been a rapid increase in cases of hepatic cirrhosis caused by this disease and indications for liver transplantation.
Currently, it is estimated that approximately 9 million people in Spain are affected by this disease, of which 1,8 million have a more severe form called steatohepatitis and more than 200.000 already suffer from advanced liver damage or cirrhosis due to this cause.
In other Western countries where the epidemic began earlier, such as the United States, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is already the first cause of liver transplantation in women and the second in men, which puts into perspective the public health problem we are addressing. we face.
