30 July 2026The European Commission has launched the EIC Pathfinder Challenges 2026 call, an initiative of the European Innovation Council (EIC) designed to fund collaborative research and innovation projects in early stages of development with the potential to generate disruptive technologies and create new markets. Integrated within Horizon Europe, this call supports high-risk, high-impact research that addresses previously defined strategic technological challenges.
In the 2026 edition, the call for applications includes three Pathfinder Challenges:
- Advanced Materials for Miniaturized Energy Harvesting Systems, focused on the development of new materials and miniaturized systems for energy harvesting and management.
- Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing, focused on the development of innovative biotechnological solutions to promote healthy aging and prevent or treat age-related diseases.
- DeepRAP: Deep Reasoning, Abstraction & Planning towards Trustworthy Cognitive AI Systems, aimed at driving a new generation of artificial intelligence systems based on reasoning, abstraction and planning.
Although the Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing challenge has the most direct relationship with biomedical research, the other two challenges may also be of interest to multidisciplinary groups at IIS Aragón working in areas such as digital health, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, medical devices or advanced materials, in collaboration with technology partners.
The call for proposals funds research projects at early technology readiness levels (TRL 1-4), with the aim of establishing the scientific foundations for future high-impact technologies. The European Union's contribution will generally be up to €4 million per project, although higher amounts may be requested when duly justified.
Opening of the call: July 23, 2026.
Deadline for submitting proposals: October 28, 2026, at 17:00 PM (Brussels time).
