17 June, 2020This is the EndeavorRx video game, indicated to improve attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave the green light this Tuesday for the first time for doctors to prescribe a video game as a treatment, in this case for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD).
This is the video game EndeavorRx, produced by Akili Interactive, with a traditional appearance and consisting of completing missions in different scenarios and overcoming all the obstacles that appear in the protagonist's path.
The FDA authorization, granted after seven years of clinical trials in more than 600 boys and girls, allows the video game to be advertised as a digital therapy to improve attention span in young people between eight and twelve years old with ADHD.
"EndeavorRx offers a medication-free option to improve symptoms associated with ADHD in children and is an important example of the growing field of digital therapeutics," said director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Jeffrey Jeffrey, in a statement. Shuren.
The video game will only be available by medical prescription and the production company has already opened a waiting list on its website for those who want to have access to the therapy once it goes on the market to sign up.
It is estimated that attention deficit hyperactivity disorders currently affect four million boys and girls between six and eleven years old in the United States, whose symptoms include difficulty maintaining concentration and controlling their behavior, as well as very high levels of activity.
One of several studies conducted over the past seven years that led to the approval of EndeavorRx as a medical treatment found that one-third of children exposed to this therapy (which consists of playing for 25 minutes a day, five days a week for four weeks) stopped having a significant attention deficit.
However, the study also warned of possible side effects such as frustration and headaches.
