Tsinghua University in Beijing has included the researcher Diego Gutiérrez at the ranking of the 100 most influential scientists of the last decade (2010-2020) in the area of Computer Graphics. Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Zaragoza, he is part of the Engineering Research Institute of Aragon (I3A), in the Graphics & Imaging Lab group, and is the the only Spanish that is part of this list, prepared by what is today considered the best of all the technical universities in China and one of the best in the world.
El ranking from Tsinghua University seeks the recognition of the most relevant technical contributions in twenty different areas, including Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction or Computer Graphics. To develop it, it takes into account the impact and contribution of more than 270 million publications based on objective metrics that include place of publication, citations or number of authors in the last ten years.
In the field of Computer Graphics there are 65 Americans and a single Spaniard among the 100 who are part from this list. By institutions, MIT, Stanford, Adobe, Google and Facebook contribute a total of 23 researchers. be in this ranking It means being between 1 and 2% of researchers in this field.
Shared distinction
Diego Gutiérrez says that, in research, awards and distinctions are always shared, “no one achieves anything by working alone, so this distinction also belongs to all my collaborators and group members, past and present. It is a great pride to see what we have built over the years. It has been difficult, there has been a lot of work invested, but, little by little, it was bearing fruit.” Remember that five theses have been awarded internationally, two members of the Graphics & Imaging Lab have been recognized as the best young researchers in Europe in their field, “and all this from Zaragoza proves that talent exists everywhere, that you just need to bet on it”, he points.
Three areas of research
The three main areas of his work are computer graphics, computational imaging and virtual reality, areas that complement each other. Some projects are pure basic research, for example exploring perceptual and cognitive aspects using virtual reality techniques; others are in the theoretical development phase, but with many potential applications, such as work to be able view scenes outside the camera's line of sight, which was recently published in Nature. And others have even given rise to a spin-off, DIVE-Medical, dedicated to early detection of ocular pathologies in babies and adults with cognitive problems, created in collaboration with doctors from the Miguel Servet University Hospital within the Vision, Image and Neurodevelopment group of the Aragon Health Research Institute.
The image, a fundamental part of knowledge
Regarding the contributions of Computer Graphics, Diego Gutiérrez explains that everything that has to do with the image is a fundamental part of knowledge, of the production process and, in general, of the progress of a modern society. "Beyond cinema or video games, which are two very powerful industries, we have fields such as engineering or architecture, medical imaging, product design, education, space exploration... It is not so much what it will contribute but what it already is contributing. And it does so progressively, like almost all technologies, so that we do not realize it. The greatest revolution“Right now, it has to do with the combination of traditionally used physical models with artificial intelligence techniques.”
Diego Gutiérrez directs the Graphics and Imaging Lab, a group that he founded in 2008 and from which he has directed twelve doctoral theses. He has been a visiting researcher at prestigious universities such as Stanford, MIT or Yale. He has been awarded the Google Faculty Research Award and has received an ERC Consolidator Grant. He is a founding partner of DIVE-Medical, a spin-off of the University of Zaragoza.
