A Chinese scientific team has developed a new and precise vaccine against leukemia, according to a study published this Monday in the specialized journal Nature Biomedical Engineering.
The research carried out by experts from the so-called Institute Of Process Engineering (IPE), of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, details a new type of therapeutic vaccine that uses self-healing polylactic acid microcapsules to coencapsulate a new PD-1 peptide and antibody.
Although the possibility of treating this disease through vaccination has already been established, clinical expectations regarding its therapeutic performance have not yet been met. "Our clinical findings revealed the high expression of EPPS8 and PD-1/PD-L1 in patients with leukemia, which could be used respectively as a new type of leukemia antigen and as a target for a vaccine," he points out in the aforementioned article. study Professor LI Yuhua, from Zhujiang Hospital. Experts detail that in this new vaccine, epitope peptides can be loaded simply, gently and efficiently into polylactic acid microcapsules.
After a single vaccine, the deposition and degradation of microcapsules at the injection site lead to the recruitment of cells with antigens. The study also highlights that this research also verified the availability of the vaccine using several epitope peptides in different models, such as so-called murine leukemia, leukemia xenograft derived from human cells and leukemia xenograft models derived from patients.
"With the advantages of polylactic acid material, convenience in preparation of vaccine formulation, diversity of vaccine components and excellent therapeutic effect, the microcapsule-based vaccine exhibits great potential for clinical use." , observes another of the IPE experts, MA Guanghui.
