26 March, 2021The Aireamos platform, with more than a hundred experts, has sent a letter to the Government and the autonomous communities with eight proposals.
The Aireamos platform, in which the Aragonese scientists Alberto J. Schuhmacher and Javier Ballester, among others, participate, has sent an open letter to the Government of Spain and the leaders of the different autonomous communities in which it urges them to implement eight measures to reduce covid transmission through ventilation. They recall that there is already "broad agreement" on reducing emphasis and saving resources on measures such as cleaning surfaces and giving greater priority to reducing the risk of contagion by inhalation of the virus.
They regret that, "despite the clarity of the scientific conclusions", the implementation of these measures is being "slow" and, furthermore, they are carried out in a "partial and incorrect" manner. In this sense, they emphasize the importance of proper use of the mask, with its correct placement and adjustment being the "most critical" aspect, and many of the infections that now occur can be avoided. Likewise, they consider that it is vital to promote outdoor activities, also for family, work or school gatherings... In this sense, they emphasize that terraces with enclosures "prevent ventilation and can be worse than traditional interiors."
In fact, they point out that there is no reason to justify limiting capacity inside and that this criterion should be replaced by others such as the CO2 level. The document details the limits of 700-800 parts per million as reference values. "It is a necessary measure to resume economic activity without generating new rebounds," they emphasize.
They remember that CO2 meters "are the best technological solution" to verify if ventilation is sufficient. For this reason, they consider its "urgent and widespread" implementation necessary. Also in educational centers, where there is a high occupancy for many hours. In all closed spaces - they emphasize - exterior ventilation must be "continuous" and if it is natural, it must be "crossed and distributed" to guarantee its effectiveness.
In the letter, the different Executives are also encouraged to define the use of HEPA filters, and also the recommendations of other technologies such as UV-C, photocatalysis, ionization or ozone. In addition to making a "strong" commitment to dissemination, offering "quality, clear and accessible" information.
