31 July 2023The Mental Health Research Group in Primary Care of the Aragon Health Research Institute, led by Javier García Campayo, professor at the Faculty of Medicine, is going to start a study in September aimed at patients with persistent covid with a psychological intervention with ' mindfulness' and amygdalar retraining. Therefore, look for 100 participants, over 18 years old, who have been diagnosed with the disease, for an eight-week intervention and a subsequent three-month follow-up.
Virginia Gasión Royo, psychologist and researcher in the group, explains that the symptoms of persistent covid are caused "by chronic inflammation and by a immune system imbalance", something that is observed in other pathologies, such as chronic fatigue syndrome or myalgic encephalomyelitis: "We are going to do a study thinking about what treatment for these ailments could be effective for persistent covid." Psychological interventions with 'mindfulness' and amygdalar retraining have already been carried out and in both diseases "the patient significantly improved general and psychological health«. Those interested in participating in the research project can write to the address longcovidzaragoza@gmail.com or call 976 506 578.
Persistent covid arises as post-acute sequelae of coronavirus infection. It presents a series of multiorgan symptoms that have to do with different symptoms, including extreme fatigue, respiratory problems, cognitive impairment, memory disturbances, insomnia... "This generates a significant impact on physical, work and emotional health and psychological discomfort appears that is accompanied by depression, anxiety, and poor quality of life," he says. In fact, persistent covid increases mental health problems.
