Aragón has already begun the processing of the purchase of the new quadrivalent vaccine that protects against serogroups A, W and Y of meningococcus and the expectation is that its administration in health centers will begin in June. This was announced yesterday by the Government of Aragon after the plenary session of the Interterritorial Health Council, attended by Minister Pilar Ventura, endorsed the agreement to modify the vaccination schedule with respect to meningitis caused by meningococcus.
In this way, the dose that protects only against meningococcus serogroup C will be changed to a quadrivalent vaccine that will be administered at age 12. Aragon will also carry out a rescue vaccination to cover the population up to those born in the year 2000, which will be carried out with individualized and progressive appointments after the summer and will affect around 80.000 young people.
The Public Health Commission also decided not to include vaccination against meningococcus B in childhood, given the epidemiological situation and current information on the vaccine. In this sense, the Minister of Health, Pilar Ventura, highlighted the importance of "maintaining a single vaccination schedule throughout the country" to ensure "equity" throughout the national territory.
Aragón registered nine cases of meningitis in the 2017-2018 season of serogroups B, C, W and Y, according to data from the Ministry of Health.
Medicines / On the other hand, Ventura also applauded the Medicine Supply Guarantee Plan that the Ministry of Health presented yesterday and which includes both preventive initiatives and guarantees in the supply of essential medicines.
According to Ventura, Aragón asked the ministry to address this issue, given that the number of notifications of supply problems grows every year and last year reached 1332, according to the Ministry's own data.
This initiative also makes it easier for alerts from the Spanish Medicines Agency to quickly reach professionals' information systems so that they "know what they can prescribe at all times and what the best therapeutic alternatives are if there is a shortage." stood out.
