A UZ study shows that confinement increases stress in women and intensifies the gender gap
9 June, 2020The researcher Alberto Jiménez Schuhmacher is clear that he will run the Rainbow Run with his family and friends, the virtual solidarity race of EL PERIÓDICO DE ARAGÓN in favor of the Zaragoza Food Bank because, as he says, science is supportive.
–As a researcher, what has been your reflection during this time?
–I have had many. Different in each phase of the pandemic. I have felt lucky to be healthy at home. I was moved by the initial response from the population, the applause. I have appreciated and valued the importance of health and science more. I have verified that Spain has a scientific culture problem. And I've been pissed off the last few weeks. It seems that we have extinguished the "fire" but we have only controlled it. I am ashamed of what we see lately in Congress and I am realizing that education is not a priority in this country.
–As a result of the current pandemic, do you think that the chip has truly changed from 'spending' to 'investing' in science?
–At the national level, with thousands of dead and infected, the economy affected and millions of unemployed, our political “representatives” have not agreed. Do you think a pact for education, health or science is possible? Science will save us from covid-19. And, in Spain, will the pandemic save science? Let's see what country we have left. Science is not improvised. We don't put money in now and that's it, we can investigate whatever we want. Fortunately we have the tradition and effort of research groups that are going to help stand up to the damn virus, even if it is with means and infrastructure that have been greatly damaged by the previous crisis.
–What connection do you find between the scientific area and the social sector?
– Full. Scientists work to have a better and fairer society. I think it is in the DNA of many scientists to help in any way they can, even without the coat.
–Is science supportive?
-A lot. Being a scientist is not a job, it is a way of living and understanding life. We have a different vision of the world. More global, more human. In one way or another we all collaborate with associations, educational centers...
– Science continues to look after people, an action to which solidarity initiatives are added. What do you think of the Rainbow Run?
–It is a very good and very necessary initiative. I hope it raises a lot and above all that it sows the need to help in the conscience of many people.
–And, about the fact that the beneficiary of this initiative is the Zaragoza Food Bank?
– Very accurate. How can we allow anyone to go hungry? But in our own city, next to our house... When Christmas came and they collected food at school, my mother prepared bags for us that weighed a lot and left marks on our hands when we arrived at school. Her hands weren't the only thing that marked me. No one can be denied food and the Zaragoza Food Bank does essential work.
–Are you going to participate in the race?
–Of course and all the family and friends will do it. And we will also continue supporting the Food Bank. Helping with the race is only a symbolic way of helping. We all can and should help in the best way we can.
