At the forefront of biohealth research in our country

Since last December, the IIS Aragón has participated in the magazine “Actualidad de las companies Aragónas” to talk about the most relevant aspects of biosanitary research in our country. Óscar López Lorente, Executive Director IIS Aragón, spoke in this opinion article about the work of the Institute

The Aragon Health Research Institute aims to promote and develop research and innovation in the field of health, through the generation of knowledge and its subsequent translation to the healthcare field in Aragon.

Created in June 2010 and accredited in 2014 and 2020 by the Carlos III Health Institute as a biohealth research center of excellence, it integrates into its structure the Lozano Blesa University Clinical Hospital, the Miguel Servet University Hospital, and the Primary Care of the Aragonese Service. of Health, in addition to the University of Zaragoza and the Aragonese Institute of Health Sciences.

The IIS Aragón develops and harmoniously integrates basic, clinical and public health research, promoting translational research for a better transfer of scientific advances obtained in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the most prevalent health problems in the population.

The scientific structure of the Institute is made up of more than 1.000 researchers, complemented by a technical structure made up of experts in innovation, in the management of national and international R&D projects, as well as in the development of projects and collaborative activities with companies and others. entities, always results-oriented.

Our activity is structured around the following thematic areas: immunity, cancer and diseases of infectious origin; cardiovascular, metabolism and nutrition; neuroscience, mental health and sensory organs; medical engineering and data science; Primary care, nursing and health care. Additionally, in recent years, a strategic line of research in Advanced Therapies has been developed, which contributes to the implementation of this type of therapies for patients in Aragon.

One of the strategic axes, fundamental for the development of the IIS Aragón activity, is collaboration with the business community, especially the Aragonese one. The provision of scientific and technological services with high added value, the development of collaborative R&D projects, the design and implementation of clinical trials and preclinical research projects, or the design and validation of medical devices and e-health technological solutions. , are some of the areas in which we develop activity in collaboration with companies.

The IIS Aragón supports innovative business initiatives in the health sector with an interest in establishing collaborations with its research groups or with its scientific and technological structures. Also, the creation of spin-off companies based on the results and technologies generated by researchers is an instrument through which the Institute promotes the transfer of knowledge to society and the reinforcement of the Aragonese business fabric at the same time. that helps generate solutions with high added value in the market.

The IIS Aragón is also a means that allows donations to be channeled from companies that want to enhance their brand image and promote their corporate social responsibility towards the field of health, being able to contribute funds to their research projects in the search for better treatments and diagnoses for the population, as well as for the development of innovation activities in their hospitals.
